The Bunkhouse provides very comfortable accomodation for 16 people, situated on the Southern flanks of Dartmoor, very close to the access points for canoeists paddling on the River Dart. A number of the most popular caves in Devon are very close by. Whatever your need the bunkhouse will provide comfortable accomodation for groups, wishing to be based in South Devon.

The South Dartmoor Bunkhouse is owned and managed by the Devon Spelæological Society (Caving Club). Until the summer of 2005 the building was used only by members and a small number of visiting caving clubs.

South Dartmoor Bunkhouse During the summer of 2005 the Society undertook the first and most major stage of a large rebuild and restoration project and have now opened the building as the South Dartmoor Bunkhouse, making this fantastic old building which has a history of being the village Dairy, an ideal base for groups to use either on a shared basis or on a sole use basis. The bunkhouse is not available to the individual traveller.

The Bunkhouse is situated in the small town of Buckfastleigh, South Devon. Buckfastleigh is a bustling old woollen town offering the visitor a good variety of amenities and facilities (see Buckfastleigh page). The town lies just in the shadow of Dartmoor and hence makes an ideal base for exploring the vast tracts of remote upland moors, and is also within easy reach of the South Devon Coast, offering the visitor sandy beaches or rugged cliffs.

The bunkhouse is ideally located for cavers, canoeists, climbers, walkers and mountain bikers. For further information about these and other outdoor pursuits, see the activites page. For more sedate days (perhaps when it rains) have a look at the local tourist attractions.

We appreciate how busy many of our customers are, so it is possible to check whether the hut is available using our calendar and to book online. For further information, please see the contact page for details of how to get in touch with the bunkhouse warden.

The Devon Spelæological Society extends a warm welcome to all who stay at the South Dartmoor Bunkhouse.
